Musicians acting like they are the most amazing thing on earth when they can’t even play their instrument. Closed-mindedness. Racism, sexism, elitism, classism, xenophobia, and opera.

Words to live by: You can learn from everyone, you might learn what NOT to do, but you still learn something.

No matter how good you are (at anything), there is always someone better.

Ian Gertenbach:

Why Agro?: Is this a rhetorical question? In short, AGRO have been around longer than I’ve been alive, being approached to play for them could not be a greater honour. And of course, metal is law.

Instrument(s): Rhythm guitar
Born: JHB
Residence: JHB
Family: Apart from my personal family, my friends and especially my bandmates are my family. Love thy neighbour!
Equipment List: Cort M520 6-String, Ibanez RG Series 7-String, Hughes & Kettner Warp 7 80W Combo Amp, Boss GT-100 Multi-Effects Processor, Ernie Ball Strings, Jim Dunlop XL Series Jazz III Plectrums.

Endorsements: I endorse all of the things I personally use. Whether the companies that make these things give me money to do so is less clear.

Best Agro memory: My first gig with the band, nothing too out of the ordinary happened but I was stressing quite profusely about how well the new line-up would be received, and judging from the many hair-whirling and head banging craniums, we seemed to pass the test! Cannot wait to make new best memories, for the best is truly yet to come.

Worst Agro memory: Clifford finished one of my roll-up cigarettes once. It was awful. I had to roll another one and everything. I refuse to cultivate bad memories, they do nothing for productivity!

Favourite Food: The edible, delicious kind. Comfort food will always go down well, so feed me starch and carbs and meat and fat!
Drinks: I have an addiction to anything that supposedly gives me energy. Otherwise, I’m partial to Spiced Gold and Coke and the occasional beer and draught.
Favourite Movie: Star Wars, Lord of the Rings and anything that gives me a chuckle. But mostly Star Wars.

Favourite Bands: I listen to so many genres and subgenres of rock and metal and other genres of music, we’ll be here forever if I list ALL my favourites. From a metal perspective, I’m going to go ahead and recommend (in alphabetical order) The Acacia Strain, Anthrax, Arch Enemy, Black Label Society, Black Sabbath, Blind Guardian, Bloodbath, Dethklok, Devildriver, Gojira, In Flames, Intervals, Iron Maiden, Jex Thoth, Judas Priest, King 810, Korpiklaani, Lamb of God, Led Zeppelin, Manowar, Mastadon, Megadeth, Meshuggah, Metallica, Motorhead, Muse, Nirvana (not technically metal but they are excellent), Opeth, Skyharbor, Slayer, Slipknot, System Of A Down, White Zombie, Whitechapel.

Side Projects, Former Bands:  We don’t do side projects :P remember... I had an indie band called The Token Nobodies in my university days, and then I joined 11th Hour for about three years, before that flaked out. Now, I still write my own easy listening garage rock, and I wistfully plan to record Star Wars themed metal for shiggles and gits but my #1 commitment would of course be Agro

Dislikes: False and backstabbing people with their own agendas, music with no thought put into it apart from dumbing down the ignorant and glorifying commercialism, arrogance, disloyalty, corruption, poor service delivery, division in the metal industry (it’s not a competition, we have to stick together), pettiness, those that choose to bring others down to make themselves feel better, and spiders. Spiders can go die.

Words to live by: There are many quotes out there but the words that have always stuck with me were uttered by my dad when I was being a 16 year old whiny little brat. He said; “Life sucks, deal with it.” Add a positive attitude to that and you’re good to go!
